Marcin Borkowski – As many of us know, Emacs has a habit (annoying for most people, I guess) of making backup copies of files it saves. Happily, it doesn’t kick in in version-controlled files (and most of my files fall into this category nowadays). But there are situations when I actually do want the backup copies.

Last week, the conclusion was that there is no easy way for add-dir-local-variable to use the dotted pair notation in the .dir-locals.el file. Well, I was wrong again.

I mentioned that the eval keyword apparently didn’t work with them. Well, I was very wrong, and my mistake was a popular one. Since it is easy to fall for it, I decided to warn here about the pitfall.

Marcin Borkowski – Some time ago I coded a certain Elisp tool (for internal use at Wiadomości Matematyczne) and I needed to preserve the value of some variable between Emacs sessions. I asked how to do this on the Emacs mailing list, and I received a whole lot of very interesting and worthwhile responses.
