I somewhere read emacs means “eight megabytes and constantly swapping”. So emacs would come from a time where eight MB was a lot. Never checked though… Also 4 or 8 is very close..

Well, that’s a very old joke, of course, and you are completely right! Nowadays Emacs can be considered pretty lightweight, which says a lot about where we are with today’s software.
