This is rather curious, given how strong is the “discrete” group in our(*) departament. Have you read “The two cultures od mathematics” by Gowers? I recall it is relevant to this issue.
(*) I say “our”, because I graduated from it and I’m thinking about coming back, upon discovering an interest in math, while already being a couple of years into the CS degree.
